Armed Forces Community Covenant
What is the Armed Forces Community Covenant?
The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly and not disadvantaged in their day to day lives.
The purpose of the Trafford Covenant is to encourage support for the Armed Forces Community who work or live in Trafford and to remember and recognise the sacrifices made by them.
For Trafford Council, the Covenant provides an opportunity to bring forward our knowledge, expertise and experience to help and advice members of the Armed Forces Community. It also gives us the opportunity to build upon the existing good work we are doing.
For the Armed Forces Community, the Covenant can help with the integration back into civilian life, for both the service member and their families.
We recognise those who put their lives on the line to defend our country deserve fair treatment. So our Armed Forces Covenant is our commitment to the men and women who serve this nation at home and abroad. Our pledge to our veterans, our regulars, our reservists and all our service families, is that together we will recognise their service and show them our support. They've done their duty, we must do ours.
Trafford Council renew their Silver Award
Trafford Council is proud and delighted to have successfully renewed their silver award for their Armed Forces Covenant. The award is formal recognition of the work Trafford Council undertakes to demonstrate support for the Armed Forces Community both in Trafford and across Greater Manchester.
A reginal selection board chaired by a senior military officer considers each nomination for an award against the award criteria, we were formally notified we had been re-selected for the silver award in July 2017. Trafford Council will be working towards a Gold award in 2018.
Aims of the Covenant
The Covenant aims to encourage all parties within a community to offer support and make it easier for Service personnel, families and veterans to access the help and support available from a wide range of providers
Equally those who have served or are serving are encouraged to do as much as they can to support their local community and integrate into civilian life.
How does it work?
Trafford Armed Forces Covenant Partnership is a group of partners including the Military who meet to co-ordinate and implement the support for the Armed Forces across Trafford.
Current members include:
- Trafford Council
- Members of 207 Field Hospital & 42 Brigade
- Department of Work and Pensions
- Trafford College
- Imperial War Museum North
- Trafford Housing Trust
- NHS Trafford
The members of the Trafford Armed Forces Covenant Partnership will continue to work towards developing and assisting a programme of work which includes; supporting reservists, recruitment of organisations who will sign a Corporate Covenant agreement, working closely with the Health Service and other organisations that provide support to wounded, injured and sick personnel, signposting to other organisations,
Trafford Council will identify resources and deliver short term joint projects with the Military in the local community and support initiatives such as the Armed Forces Week.
Service, Ex-Service personnel and their families
One of the priorities of the Covenant Partnership was to create a 'Directory of Services' to signpost Service and ex-Service personnel and their families to the services on offer from partners in Trafford.
Veterans are not a burden or cost to our community, they are an asset which, if engaged with wisely, can be of even greater benefit. We should seek to build on this foundation to utilise these individuals’ experiences and skills to the benefit of the wider community.

Businesses and Charities Corporate Covenant
A corporate covenant is a written and publicised voluntary pledge from businesses and charitable organisations who wish to demonstrate their concrete support for the armed forces community.
The corporate covenant is designed to allow businesses and charitable organisations to express their support, and commit to ways in which they can provide that support.
Who can sign a Corporate Covenant
Business, charities and other private sector organisations.
A corporate covenant can be adopted by a business or charitable organisation of any size, and from any industry, whether you are an employer of a member of the armed forces community or simply wish to acknowledge publicly your support for the armed forces.
Each organisation will be encouraged to offer support in a way most appropriate to their situation and capacity.
For example, a business or charity may wish to promote their organisation as armed forces friendly, through participation in Armed Forces Day, or through exclusive discounts to members of the armed forces community. Larger organisations may wish to actively seek to employ serving reservist personnel for the skills they possess, or strive to support the employment of ex-regular personnel and service spouses.
